Innehållet är grundat på beprövad erfarenhet, lagar, regelverk, nationella riktlinjer och med stöd från relevanta vetenskapliga studier.
Det finns idag vetenskap och beprövad erfarenhet i området men nya utvärderingar av bäst praxis görs kontinuerligt av europeiska och amerikanska specialistföreningar. Här följer en aktuell referenslista. Gällande förslag till praxis har utarbetats av European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists 2013 (Benson et. al. nedan).
